Students should meet the basic requirements of the following five criteria to be eligible for graduation at IHS: course requirements, journal publication requirements, completion of review, thesis/dissertation requirements and defense requirements. Independent evaluation of these five aspects is the basis for application for defense and for degree conferral.
Thesis should be completed by the graduate student alone under advisor's guidance. It should reflect the necessary training received by the student and demonstrate thoroughness, comprehensiveness, innovativeness, independent thinking and an ability to conduct independent research. Thesis defense requires certification of eligibility, mainly including ideological outlook, course work, scientific research and quality of the thesis.
For standards of degree conferral at IHS, see (link). Degree applicants are subject to a comprehensive review. A decision to grant the degree is made to those that meet the standards and is submitted to respective Degree Committees at the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Sciences or Shanghai Jiao Tong University for final approval.
A list of the students granted with the doctoral degree should be on public display for 3 months. Degree is then awarded to those without objections.
